1. Jesus- A Jew named Jesus was born in the town
of Bethlehem in Judea. Jesus was raised in the village of Nazareth in northern
Palestine. He was baptized by a prophet known as John the Baptist. As a young
man, Jesus took up the trade of carpentry.
apostle- Some of the Gospels are taught to have
been written by one or more of Jesus' disciples, or pupils. These 12 men later
came to be called apostles.
Paul- Apostle of Christ, never met Jesus, used
Greek and Latin to spread teaching, included Jews and Gentiles. He taught
throughout Roman Empire and wrote letters which became the Epistles.
Diaspora- Jewish people driven from their
homeland into exile because of rebelling against the Romans.
Constantine- Emperor of Rome in 312 A.D,
credited his success in battle to the Christian God, accepted Christianity,
ended persecution, and approved Christianity as a Roman religion.
bishop- A level of church hierarchy; each city
would have its own bishop.
Peter- The first bishop of Rome; the 'rock' on
which Christianity would be built.
pope- The head of the Christian Church; Peter
was the first pope.
3. Jesus emphasized personal relationships with God, importance of people's love
to God, neighbors and enemies. Also, offered eternal life if you repented for
your sins.
4. The early Christians faced persecution from the Romans
because, they refused to worship the Roman gods.
5. The importance of the Nicene Creed was that it defined the Church's basic
beliefs.
